Offering reliable and secure electrical connections, they feature at least two rows of parallel pins and offer high density in a miniature design. The D-shaped socket or plug also provides shielding from EMI. This fits snugly into the receptacle, providing a secure mechanical attachment as well as proper alignment and fit.

Although commonly used on computers, gaming consoles and for networking and communications, these designs are used actively in industrial settings, particularly in aerospace. Most are built to meet the requirements of the MIL-DTL-83513 specifications. They can be made available with Space-grade ratings as well.

Micro-D connectors can also be manufactured for use with PCB cable assemblies because they save valuable wiring space.

These miniature connector designs offer high dielectric strength. They also provide low contact resistance and high current capabilities. Additionally, they are extremely resistant to shock and vibration because of their rectangular shield and a screw design that ensures tight mating.

Shell materials can be manufactured of metal or plastic depending on the application.

TE Connectivity and SnapEDA, the Internet’s first parts library for circuit board design, are collaborating to make more than 25,000 new digital models available to electronics designers, helping them bring their products to market faster.

TE-Symbols-&-Footprints-on-SnapEDATraditionally, designers have spent days creating models for each component in their designs, a tedious and time-consuming process. Some components, such as connectors, are particularly challenging to create models for due to their non-standard shapes, pitches, pads, and cutouts.

With this new collaboration, designers can now download free printed circuit board (PCB) footprints and symbols for TE components instantly, saving them days of time so they can focus on product optimization and innovation. The models are compatible with Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, Eagle, PADS, DXDesigner, and KiCad.

These components include a wide range of connectors — such as USB, flexible printed circuit, modular, mobile battery, terminal, and jack connectors — as well as sensors, fuses, switches, relays, DC-DC converters, thermistors, resistors, and diodes.

“TE Connectivity has an extremely broad product portfolio. With everything from connectors to sensors, designers can now seamlessly select and design-in a wide variety of components into their designs by downloading the symbol and footprint for that product instantly,” said Natasha Baker, CEO of SnapEDA.

“As a global technology company with more than 7,000 engineers, we know how important these digital models can be for designers,” said David Sinisi, VP of Engineering Excellence at TE Connectivity. “We’re excited to partner with SnapEDA to make our models available free of charge so that it’s easier, faster and more convenient for engineers to optimize their products and bring them to market.”

The process is simple. Designers simply search for their desired product on the TE Connectivity or SnapEDA website, download the model and then drag-and-drop it into their designs.

In addition to providing the models themselves, SnapEDA provides transparency into the standards that each model follows. For instance, designers can see whether a footprint follows TE Connectivity’s recommended dimensions, or industry standards (such as IPC-7351B). Each model also includes an automated report generated by SnapEDA’s patent-pending verification checker, to help prevent common manufacturing issues.

Hirose has developed a unidirectional active optical connector system with built-in E/O on the Tx (transmit) end and an O/E on the Rx (receiver) end. The BF4M optical connector system converts a balanced high-speed differential electrical signal on a PCB at one end into a MM optical signal for transmission down a very thin flexible FO cable, and then converts it back into an electrical signal on the other end. The BF4M Series is designed as a separate plug and receptacle that solders to the PCB to eliminate the thermal issues associated with soldering the E/O and O/E devices directly to the PCB.

HIrose-BF4M-Series-imageDesigned with an ultra-low profile and space-saving receptacle, the BF4M Series optical interconnects support high-speed isolated signal transmission from 0.05 up to 6.25 Gbps and long distance transmission up to 100 m. The user-friendly optical connector features an innovative internal wiring system that offers all the benefits of fiber optic signaling including high signal quality, low power consumption (less than 120 nW), and excellent EMI noise prevention. The BF4M uses high flex fiber optic cable capable of withstanding significant bending cycles tested at a 2mm bending radius.

While designed for factory automation and medical industries, the lightweight optical connector system is an ideal solution for any application that requires long reach, high speed and limited wiring space.

“The BF4M Series offers significant space-savings when compared to conventional systems using a SFP module and LC connector. AEF high-voltage connections for the agricultural sector

HARTING AEF high voltage CONNECTIONS C2017-11-09_Traktor_tractor

HARTING AEF high-voltage connections on tractors

The electrification of agricultural machinery and auxiliary components is becoming increasingly important. For several years HARTING has focused its innovative efforts on the development of a standardized interface between tractor and attachment. The resulting newly developed AEF high-voltage connections were presented at last November’s AGRITECHNICA trade fair in numerous applications.

The agricultural sector is undergoing transition. It now reflects the industrial sector’s desire for increased efficiency, improved control properties and highly dynamic machinery. The electrification of agricultural machinery and vehicles can make this possible, but the market is significantly different from the automotive sector. A combine harvester is more of a moving and production machine than a simple automobile in traffic. The electrification of tractors, other agricultural machinery and ancillary equipment opens up new perspectives and potential. Tractors that are powered electrically and/or that generate power may, for example, power a seed drill, fertilizer spreader, or rake. The use of electrified agricultural machinery leads to more efficiency and productivity, and on the other hand can reduce the maintenance and error susceptibility of electric motors.

HARTING-2017-11-09_Komponenten-am-Traktor_components-on-tractor

Components used in the electrification of tractors

The application of electric drives, e.g. to fans and dosing, increases the efficiency of a seed drill from 60 to 85% compared to hydraulic motors. In addition, the targeted use of operating resources such as seed and fertilizer and the optimized controllability of the attachment significantly reduce power and fuel consumption. The less complex structure also results in a reduction of the installation space required. A second major trend is data generation and data management as a prerequisite for precision farming.

In the field of electrification, the interface between the tractor and the attachment is of critical importance, as different tractor manufacturers must be compatible with different implement manufacturers. To date, the required standard interface for direct and/or alternating current has been missing in action. In addition to a standardized interface for data, the ISOBUS — a reliable and equally standardized interface for the transmission of electrical energy — is required for use under the special conditions and challenges imposed by agriculture. Connectors that have been installed in machines to date are not suitable for the distribution of correspondingly high electrical power within the tractor and on the attachment. This is due to the fact that typical 12-V generators (power approximately 1 kW) cannot cover the energy requirements of a sprayer (1.2 kW), a seeder (3 kW) or a mulcher (140 kW).

Consequently, the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) was founded in 2008 as a body for the standardization of various agricultural topics, which HARTING Technology Group joined in 2011. In cooperation with the members of the AEF and all major agricultural machinery manufacturers, the necessary standardized interface was developed — the AEF High Voltage Connector for the transmission of 480 Vac or 700 Vdc between tractor and accessory equipment. AEF High Voltage connection is a new technology designed to meet the future power requirements of auxiliary and attached equipment. In this way, HARTING supports the development of all-electric and hybrid drive systems on the tractor as well as the increasing demand for electric drives on attachments.

HARTING-2017-11-09_AEF-Hochspannungsanschlüsse_AEF-high-voltage-connections

HARTING’S AEF tractor connector

The “tracker connector,” HARTING’s first product developed exclusively for agricultural technology, is designed for a maximum output of 150 kW at 480 Vac or 700 Vdc. It features protection class IP69 K in plugged and unplugged state, and is rated for a temperature range of -40° to 85°C. With the ac solution, the “intelligence” remains on the tractor, whereby components on the attachment can be economized. In contrast, the dc variant only needs an interface to supply all electric motors of the attachment. Outside of the standardization, the new interface is also used as a 48 V connection with a maximum power of 10 kW. The solution is also impressive for its breakaway functionality and good feel thanks to rubberised surfaces.

In addition to its robust connector solutions, HARTING offers extensive sensor installations, custom PCB and cabling solutions, and cross-industry IoT solutions that connect machines and equipment to the Cloud for condition monitoring for a wide range of agricultural applications.

Video touts top 5 reasons to use flat cables instead of round

$

Advances in flat cable technology have made flat cables much more viable and dependable for many applications where round cables have primarily been used. Flat cables have many technical and performance enhancing advantages over round cables, so Cicoil has released a new video to clearly illustrate “The Top 5 Reasons to Use Flat Cable in your Design.

cicoil-top-5-reasons-to-use-flat-cableThe following is summary of each reason to consider utilizing flat cables instead of round:

  1. Flat cables save space – they eliminate many of the redundant materials found in round cable designs which allows for a very compact and easy-to-use flat profile. In fact, flat cables occupy only 50% of the space comparable to round cables, resulting in significant weight and space savings.
  2. Flat cables clean up messy wiring in a single, compact package – With advances in machine technology, many more components are required for power, signal and pneumatics, resulting in a spaghetti-like tangle of wires and tubing. This leads to less available space to work with and creates clutter, design problems, reliability issues, and ultimately cable failure. Cicoil’s flat cables allow for a more compact cable package, with better reliability and overall cable performance, especially in continuous flexing applications.
  3. Flat cables are more flexible – Unlike round cables that incur excessive twisting and continuous stress on the inner wires, conductors in a flat cable flex in the same cycle, at the same time and in the same plane of motion. Cicoil flat cables have an extremely tight bend radius, which allows the cables to fit in very confined and compact spaces.
  4. Flat cables have superior electrical performance – In round cables, wires tend to twist and turn inside the jacket, so the spacing and length of travel varies and constantly changes. Cicoil’s unique flat cables incorporate equally spaced conductors/pairs with the exact same distance to travel, resulting in faster signal speeds, less skew and higher current-carrying capacity.
  5. Flat cables are simple, easier to repair and stronger – Round cables tend to stress out their inner components due to the unequal load sharing that is required in motion applications. The parallel conductors in a flat cable equally share any stresses and loads, which results in a much stronger and longer life cable.

Additional videos in the series include: “A History of Innovation,” “Flat Cables for a Round World,” “Standard Cicoil Flat Cables Overview,” ”Mission Critical Flat Cables,” and “Harsh Environments.”

igus develops honeycomb structure to take strain off energy supply systems

$

honeycomb structureIt’s not unusual for engineers to turn to nature to help create new designs. This was the case when teams from igus turned needed to create a time and space saving device for product designers.

igus developed a honeycomb structure to provide unique strain relief for energy supply systems. Cables and hoses can be pressed into the honeycomb, and when it is closed, the honeycomb cavities are pushed gently, but tightly, around the cables. The product by the German-based company, which has a representation in East Providence, R.I., saves designers assembly and engineering time. The cables stay untangled in the honeycomb and the system allows for quicker assembly and breakdown of products.

The product can be mounted in seconds and saves assembly time by up to 80%. The system also saves space, protects cables in the energy chain and offers more flexibility for designers. The system is easy to open to insert new cables or replace worn or damaged cables.

The universal strain relief system is available in horizontal and vertical versions. The horizontal strain relief CFU.H can be installed in layers and allows the insertion of different cables in one layer. It is screwed from above in front of the mounting bracket and can be used for long travels at the fixed end. The vertical strain relief system, CFU.V, can be hooked on in front of the mounting bracket. Different cables are inserted into the vertical rows. The system is tightly closed with a clip lock and protects the cables against mechanical stress.

The new honeycomb system is part of an innovative campaign by igus to create faster and simpler harnessing of energy chains. With the E4.1L, igus offers the easiest e-chain on the market to fill. An innovative separator system, which was introduced last year, also makes it easier for designers to keep cables and wires from getting tangled. The new strain relief products allow designers the freedom to insert cables into the E4.1L precisely. The designer can install the cables at any time, and the system allows the designer to change the product without complication.

gold-plated contactsBinder USA LP has added the M8 12-pin to its series 718 and 768 lines of M8 connectors. The 12 gold-plated contacts allow for more data connections in a small form connector, making it easy to combine multiple connections into one connector to save panel space. The IP67 rated connectors are typically used with automation-related products including photoelectric, proximity and temperature sensors.

The M8 12-pin is an effective solution for smaller devices that require both smaller connectors and protection from liquids and small particles. It is available in male or female molded cable and panel mount connectors with cable lengths of 2  and 5 m, and standard single wire length of 200 mm. Gold-plated contacts provide low contact resistance and each receptacle is prewired with 16-gauge wires using UL PUR cable or single wires. The M8-12 is rated up to 30 Vdc, 1 A.

Continuing to extend the breadth of its interconnect solutions, Harwin has announced the latest addition to the M40 series. With phosphor bronze contacts that are rated for currents of up to 1 A, these lightweight, low profile 1-mm pitch units are the smallest in the company’s portfolio of cable-to-board connectors. They have been developed specifically to attend to the needs of modern electronic designs, where densely populated PCBs are stacked closely together.

M40 connectors are available in both single and double row options, with vertical and horizontal surface mount configurations for the shrouded male headers. This means they are versatile enough to serve a wide array of different layout requirements. Pre-cabled female contacts are available off-the-shelf, with complete cable assembly layouts on request, enabling customers to avoid making heavy investment on crimp tooling (plus all the training and procedural planning that goes with it). As a result, these connectors will prove particularly attractive for prototyping or small volume runs

Supporting 50 mate/un-mate cycles, these components have an insulation resistance of 100 MΩ and cover an operational temperature range of –25° to 85°C. Located within an attractive price bracket, they are targeted at industrial control/monitoring, communications infrastructure, industrial drives and consumer electronics. They are supplied in either tube packaging or a tape-and-reel format, thus making them very well suited to automated production processes.

Industrial poke-home connector is first without wire stop

AVX Corp. has released the first industrial poke-home connector available without a wire stop. The new 2.5-mm poke-home contact — the latest addition to its 70-9296 Series STRIPT insulator-less, single-position, horizontal, poke-home contacts — combines a low profile with a range of compatible wire gauges: 20–26AWG solid and stranded wire. It is the first in the series and on the market to offer variants both with and without a wire stop.

poke-home connectorDesigned for use in solid-state lighting (SSL), industrial machine control, sensor, smart grid, building control, security system, and other ruggedized, space-constrained board-to-board, module-to-module, and wire-to-board applications, both versions of the poke-home contact feature a closed, dual-beam, high-spring-force, box contact design with robust, fatigue-resistant, phosphor bronze contact beams and an integral centering guide, ensuring proper positioning and providing maximum mechanical stability and wire/pin retention strength. In addition, the variant without a wire stop allows traditional pin jumpers to pass through the back of the contact unrestricted, rather than halting their travel at the back of an insulator, effectively absorbing variable PCB and module mating tolerances in linear board-to-board applications.

The new 70-9296 Series 2.5-mm poke-home contacts are rated for 300 Vac based on contact spacing, 6–12 A based on AWG, five-cycle durability, and operating temperatures extending from –40° to 125°C. They are also mating compatible with competitors’ jumpers and are packaged on tape and reel for automated SMT placement.

“Our portfolio of single-position poke-home contacts is available in a wider range of sizes that accept a broader range of solid and stranded wire than every competing poke-home connector currently available on the market, and is the first to offer a contact without a wire stop for effective tolerance absorption and manufacturing relief in ruggedized, space-constrained SSL and industrial applications,” said Tom Anderson, product manager at AVX. “The most capable competing contacts currently accept a maximum of 22 AWG, while our industry-leading offering extends up to 20 AWG. Many competing contacts are also taller and don’t accept stranded wire without tinning, like ours do, and none of them currently offer a 2.5 mm profile or a version without a wire stop.”

STRIPT contacts provide simple, reliable, and cost-effective alternatives to larger and more expensive, but equally reliable, one- and two-piece insulated connector solutions, as well as inexpensive, but wildly unreliable hand-soldered connections. They surface-mount to PCBs, are compatible with solid and stranded wires, feature integral wire guides and — with the exception of one of the new 2.5 mm variant — a wire stop, and are currently available in five sizes: 1.7, 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 mm, all of which are UL approved, save for the new 2.5 mm variants, which are pending approval, but expected to be green-lit by mid April.
